The Earth's Population Burden

World's Population

According to the International Programs Center, U.S. Bureau of the Census, the total population of the World, projected to 12/31/2000 at 8:42:08 GMT (12/31/2000 at 3:42:08 AM EST) is 6,118,953,704

Environmentalist site, recycling, planting trees, restoring wildlife habitat, fixing dripping faucets, replacing your lawn with drought-resistant ground cover, and abortion of unwanted children (especially in developing countries - where mostly non-white people live) as some of the ways to reduce the threat of overpopulation on the earth.

Religion is pointed out as an obstacle to population stabilization.   However, the church's objection to population control is not that they do not want to stabilize the world's population, but they are opposed to the chief method proposed by population stabilization proponents - the murder of innocent lives by abortion.

The environmentalist claim that the first and most important thing you can do as an individual is to control your own reproduction.   This means having, at most, two children.   If you want more, adopt. In light of the fact that Americans consume almost a quarter of global resources (with only five percent of the world’s population ) the planet would benefit tremendously from reversing population growth in the United States.

If the population of the United States comprises only 5 percent of the entire world's population, how is a reduction of a few million Americans going to make a significant difference?

In arguing that the earth is not overpopulated, Simon calculates (on the basis of one square foot per person) that the entire population of the planet could fit into the city limits of Jacksonville, Florida.   Similarly, Thomas Lambert argues that if the entire population of the world were placed in the state of Alaska, each individual would receive nearly 3,500 square feet of space - about one-half the size of the average American homestead with front and back yards.   If the entire world's population were placed in Texas there would be 22,338 people per square mile.   The population density of the City of New York is 24,327 per square mile.   That is 34.9 people per acre.

Watch for strategically placed "buzz words" such as sustainable, global warming, ozone depletion, deforestation, biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, acid rain, religious right, and many more used to reinforce their message.   Planting unwarranted fears in the minds of the young people of this country conditions them to fear the future and distrust their parents.   Social, moral, and spiritual problems far exceed those of the environment.   A morally accountable society made so by faith in God our Creator, could solve all the problems facing mankind with God's help.
